PROFINET is the Industrial Ethernet solution created by PROFIBUS and PROFINET International (PI). Ethernet is the most popular communication medium for creating networks worldwide. The roles and specifications of these two technologies often cause confusion.

Profinet ethernet

The Profinet protocol is based on Industrial Ethernet and is a communication standard for factory automation. It describes the entire data exchange between so-called slaves such as Turck's multiprotocol I/O modules and a controller, the Profinet master. In this function Profinet is considered the successor to the Profibus fieldbus protocol. EtherNet/IP is No. 1, followed by Profinet. It also appears that EtherNet/IP is growing slightly faster than Profinet. Wireless technologies now represent 4 percent of the worldwide industrial network market.
